Five/5ive Press Release

In 1997, when Spice Girls hysteria had reached global proportions, the team behind Sporty, Posh et al, decided the time was right to create a boy band with ‘attitude and edge’.

They placed an advert in a London newspaper with the grabbing headline, ‘Do You Want To Be A Spice Boy?’

Five was born (now stylized as 5ive) and featured the nucleus of Ritchie Neville, Sean Conlon and Scott Robinson. They had beat 3000 other hopefuls in a series of auditions along with Abz Love and Jason J Brown. They were chosen for their vocal harmonies, good looks and dance moves to front what would become one of the most successful UK boy bands. It was even rumoured that a young Russell Brand auditioned for 5ive. “I went along, auditioned and as you can tell they did not accept me,” Brand said some years later, confirming the rumour. “I believe I sang ‘More than Words’ by Extreme for my audition.”

The group (sans Brand) were signed by Simon Cowell to RCA/BMG and in November 1997, released their debut single, ‘Slam Dunk (Da Funk)’ written by hit maker Max Martin, which debuted at number 10 on the UK singles chart.

Follow up single, ‘When the Lights Go Out’ – a fusion of rap, hip-hop and pop – went top 10 in the US and Top 5 in both Australia and the UK and helped catapult their debut album 5IVE globally, charting in over 20 countries.

‘Got the Feelin’, ‘Everybody Get Up’ and ‘Keep on Moovin’ also charted internationally and 1999’s ‘If Ya Getting’ Down’ peaked at number 2 in Australia.

There were also the follow up albums Invincible (1999) which sold 2.5 million copies worldwide and Kingsize (2001) – a gold record in both Australia and the UK.

5IVE were a household, global brand.

“I was just 17 at the time,” reflects Ritchie Neville of the mass hysteria surrounding the group. “To begin with, you start getting recognized and the fame was really fun for about the first six months. There were screaming school girls and it was crazy. We were thrown into media parties, free drinks and then we became the focus of British tabloid newspapers wanting scandals. It was a lot to take in.”

In 2000, 5IVE teamed up with Queen’s Roger Taylor and Brian May and released a re-working of the classic ‘We Will Rock You’. The song charted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, making it 5ive’s second number-one UK single and their ninth consecutive top-ten UK hit.

‘Let’s Dance’ was 5ive’s third and final number one UK single.

The successful boyband announced their split in September 2001 after five incredible years. They had experienced success around the world, selling an estimate of 15-20 million copies of their records worldwide, including 7 million copies of their albums worldwide and 2 million in the United States, and picking up numerous awards along the way.

The boys needed a well-deserved break from the long 18-hour working days and non-stop touring and travelling that their success demanded.

After a ten year hiatus, 5ive reunited and played various shows with and without Abz Love and J Brown, but today the nucleus of Neville, Conlon and Robinson remains at the core of 5ive.

“It’s been great to get back and get to know the guys again,” says Neville of working with his bandmates. “With Sean and Scott we had such an intense experience back in the day and we now are such good friends. That’s the real beauty of this big reunion that has kept us doing shows.”

The reunion includes an Australian tour for only the second time for 5ive – the band last toured in 1998 at the peak of their Australian fame, appearing on ABC-TV’s Recovery and selling out shows in most capital cities.

Neville laughs, “Moral of the story don’t call yourself after the number of members in your band!”
